Electrical Engineer (IST- 1974) and Ph.D. in Physics (University of Chicago, 1979), with Aggregation (UNL).
He has been retired since April 2019.
He is currently Scientific Advisor to the Vanguard Properties group.
Previously: Coordinating Researcher of the Chair of Renewable Energies, University of Évora until 2019, where he was also President of the Scientific Council of IIFA (Instituto de Investigação e Formação Avançada) and then its Director. Founder (in 2012) and President of the Instituto Português de Energia Solar until the present. From 1996 to 2010, he was an Invited Full Professor in the IST Physics Department. Coordinating Researcher at INETI-LNEG until 2006, in the Renewable Energies Department. Founder and twice President of CCE, Centro para a Conservação de Energia (now ADENE). Founder and twice President of SPES, Sociedade Portuguesa de Energia Solar (Portuguese Section of ISES) and President of ACTD – Associação para a Ciência, Tecnologia e Desenvolvimento. Founder and CSO of several energy companies.

He was Associate Editor of Solar Energy (Elsevier).
He has done extensive research in solar energy, specializing in optics and thermodynamics. He is the author of the books “As Energias Renováveis: a opção inadiável” (1998), “Jeremias e o Desenvolvimento Sustentável” (2020), and coordinator and author of “Desenvolvimento Sustentável: verdade e consequências” (2022), “Descarbonização da Economia, Energia e o Futuro” (2023) and a large number of scientific publications (>260) in areas such as “Non Imaging Optics”, Solar Electricity by Thermal and PV, Lighting and Photocatalysis, Solar Radiation Statistics, Solar Systems Engineering for Water Heating, Space Heating and Cooling, Absorption Cooling, Solar Drying, Solar Ponds, Solar Greenhouses and Solar Cooking. He has proposed and coordinated many national and European projects, including the current H2020 program. He has represented Portugal on numerous occasions in European R&D forums.

He is a member of the Academia de Engenharia (Portugal) and an honorary member of the Mexican Academy of Energy. He is a member of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa.
He has received several awards, most notably the “Heating and Cooling Award for Lifetime Achievement” from the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 2008 and the ADENE EDUCAR category award in 2021.
